Communion

Post by War Doctor on Sun Nov 29, 2015 9:08 pm

Should communion be open to all Christians or only to members of that church or denomination?

Communion should be closed depending on your denomination. In Catholicism it must be closed because of our beliefs surrounding the Eucharist.

So Jehoshaphat I've been meaning to clarify something, what do you think is the state of communion between Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox?

We are currently in a state of discommunion or whatever the word is. I think it is really unfortunate and I hope that it will be mended.

#Question Suppose someone who is not apart of any church and takes communion with few other believers, is that considered open or closed communion?

If you're not part of a church then it's open, closed means that you must be a member of the church or denomination to participate.

I believe that each person should search their hearts to check them to see if they have anything wrong in their lives. If not, I believe they can take communion everywhere.

Well I think using the criteria of having nothing wrong in our lives none of us would take communion Tongue out

But this does bring up an interesting question, Blitz if you were at a church that practiced closed communion and you were not a member there would you take communion anyway?

I mean as in a glaring problem that is consistent that we aren't dealing with.

No, I would not.

On communion, what about feet washing? Is that a requirement (John 13:14)?

I think that should be practiced. Does your church practice feet washing Farmer? Also do you mean in connection with communion or?

Yes we practice it as a part of communion. I believe that a person should not partake of the bread or the cup without also having their feet washed. How many denominations still practice it?

I'm guessing your church is pretty much the only one that says foot washing has to be done before communion. I don't see in the passage you linked to though a connection between foot washing and communion, besides it taking place at the last supper.

However plenty of denominations still practice foot washing just not as a necessary part of communion.

We don't necessarily say it has to be done before communion, it is how we do it though simply because that is the order Jesus did. We do feel it is a commandment of Jesus that it is done.

We practice closed communion. I don't think two people that have different beliefs should have communion with each other.

I find closed communion offensive and unnecessary and against SCRIPTURE. just explain to me how we are supposed to judge someone's standing with God???/

I find closed communion very important. Especially in my own tradition, if someone who does not agree with us takes communion with us it causes a type of scandal. We are not in communion with them and there ideas so we shouldn't receive communion. Because that is what communion is, agreeing with one another and being in common in everything, beliefs, ideas, doctrine, etc.

You didn't answer my point at all. Also we are not judging people's standing with God we are judging there standing with His Church. If they are not in communion with us they should not partake of COMMUNION with us.

YOu didn't make a point. YOu also ignored my point. Why can't all remember Christ's death? That's what the HOLY SCRIPTURE and JESUS HIMSELF tells us to do.

All can, if you want to take communion then become part of the Church; there's nothing stopping you. If you feel like you can't then don't take it with us who believe we need to be in agreement on what it is before partaking.

I do remember his death, I even believe that his death is mysteriously connected with our current time in the Eucharist and if someone doesn't believe that they shouldn't take communion with us.

If you look up the word communion in the dictionary you will realize that the word itself points to a closed communion.

Here is a quote from Websters definition of communion: "a body of Christians having a common faith and discipline".

If I don't have a common faith or discipline with another person, I am not in communion with them. Therefor how can I partake of communion with them?
